Watching the fire performance
In November 2024, before the LA wildfires, I made a firehouse and set it on fire. During the performance, I was sometimes looking directly onto the fire and was also sometimes ignoring the fire — closing my eyes, looking elsewhere, turning around.
The firehouse was made of plaster, clay and wire. It was around 3 feet tall.
Here are the basic rules of the Watching the fire performance:
the performer had to watch the fire and then refuse to watch it and then watch it again, etc;
the artist had to think about the fire during the entire performance;
the artist was not allowed to interact with the audience;
the performance had to end when the fire stopped naturally or when the artist thought that it was the right time, whichever came first.
